why mood boards are VITAL + a free template!
Creating a mood board is seriously one of my most favorite things to do in the entire world. I love hopping on pinterest and saving images that inspire me. It often leads to me sketching, tearing sheets from magazines and truly letting my ideas fly.
BUT they are vital for a design process because they are visually communicating an idea - whether it’s to yourself or a client. I create one for each and every client to translate my vision to my clients and also keep us on track. It also really helps clients understand where you’re drawing your inspiration from!
THE THREE RULES OF A GREAT MOOD BOARD
Now, these are just here as guidelines. I say your mood board can be whatever you make it. For client purposes, these are super helpful to have when communicating ideas.
1. CONSISTENT AESTHETIC VIBE
Do you want your mood board to make someone get the feels or truly fall in love with a concept you’re trying to sell? You need to look at it from a deeper level than what purely “looks good.” Keep in mind your graphics, photographs, typography and even layout. Each should be intentionally chosen to give someone a specific feeling.
2. A COLOR STORY
In addition to graphics + photos, a mood board should (but doesn’t have to!) contain a color palette. If you’re working on branding, then it’s definitely essentially! All of the content you select should create a color story and complement each other including the tone and vibrancy of an image.
3. A THOUGHTFUL LAYOUT
Thanks to all of the creatives of the world, there are SO MANY wonderful templates and layouts out there to choose from. Depending on who my client is and what the project is, I tend to switch up my mood board layout. I think it’s so fun when designers add in textures and really play with spacing.
If you’re going a safer route before you dive into extreme layouts, make sure all of your spacing is even and clean between photos before sending off to the client.
Cheers to building a fun mood board! Be sure to share yours with me if you do. Xo, S
